Ready-to-use chilled canine semen extender for extension, cooling, storage, shipping, and insemination protocols.
What the Extender does
BullGen™ Extender provides a buffering and preservation medium for the sperm already present in the original collection. Adding extender increases the liquid volume; it does not create sperm, increase the total sperm count, or turn a poor-quality collection into a high-quality sample.
Current BullGen protocol
- Use the 2nd (sperm-rich) fraction only.
- Bring the extender to room temperature before use. Adding cold extender directly to fresh semen can cause cold shock.
- Pre-warm collection tubes, pipettes, and AI equipment to room temperature.
- Use clean, completely dry equipment. Water, soap, and disinfectant residue can harm sperm.
- Evaluate and record concentration, progressive motility, and morphology before extension.

These ranges are a guide. Adjust according to your laboratory standards and semen evaluation.
Mixing
- Add the extender slowly to the semen.
- Mix by gentle inversion. Do not shake.
- Label the tube with dog identification, collection date/time, and dilution ratio.
Cooling, storage, and shipping
- Store extended semen at approximately 4°C / 39°F.
- Use gradual cooling before refrigeration to reduce temperature shock.
- The current protocol describes 3–5 days of viable chilled storage while retaining at least 70% of initial motility under proper conditions.
- Evaluate motility before shipping and again before insemination.
- Ship in an insulated chilled container capable of maintaining the sample at approximately 4°C.
Before insemination
Warm the semen gently to room temperature and perform a motility evaluation before use. Follow the appropriate reproductive protocol for vaginal AI, TCI, or other veterinary-directed insemination method.
Extender storage
Keep the unused extender refrigerated at 4–7°C. Do not freeze. Check the expiration date before use.
